Defense of Democracy University: Social Media 101

Get ready to deepen your knowledge and hone your skills with our new Defense of Democracy University workshop series! Almost every Tuesday until the end of the summer, we’ll be holding free workshops via Zoom at 7 p.m. Central.

• July 22: Social Media Training 101
• July 29: Making the Most of Social Media & Using TikTok Live.  (with Mark Westin and Karen Svoboda)Mark Westin–our Communications Chair–will provide an overview of the current media landscape, with a focus on social media, and reference the video while covering some basic dos and don’ts. To make the session as valuable as possible, attendees are encouraged to come prepared with real-world examples of their social media challenges, as well as questions about what is or isn’t appropriate to post—both personally and when representing an organization like Defense of Democracy.Mark Westin is a seasoned media professional with over 20 years of experience in major media markets including New York, London, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. He has served as a network television news producer and executive producer, as well as a documentary film producer, director, and production executive. Mark played a key leadership role as Senior Producer and Vice President on the launch teams of two national cable channels. A multiple Emmy Award winner and nominee, he is also a first-place recipient of the National Newspaper Association Award for Video Journalism. A Voting Member of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Mark is Faculty Emeritus at the New York Film Academy and a contributing author to Best Practices for Broadcast Journalists, published by the Freedom Forum.
