Reducing Gun Violence
Our action team is dedicated to reducing gun violence and promoting gun safety. We focus on actions that support the enactment of gun safety laws in Texas and advocate for voluntary buyback programs, particularly for firearms designed for mass killings. In addition to a variety of special actions throughout the year, our action team holds monthly meetings throughout the school year. These in-person gatherings provide an opportunity to learn from knowledgeable speakers who share insights on critical topics such as Texas gun laws, current court cases, and gang activity in Tarrant County. By staying informed, we aim to empower our team to address pressing issues in our community effectively.
We have a presence on Facebook and Instagram with a member who is dedicated to managing those accounts for us.

Here are some facts we want you to know about the weak gun laws in Texas.
No Background Checks:
Texas does not require criminal background checks for firearm purchases from unlicensed sellers.
Permitless Carry:
In 2021, Texas removed the requirement for individuals to obtain a permit to carry concealed handguns in public.
Guns on Campuses:
The state allows individuals with carry licenses to bring concealed firearms onto college and university campuses.
Firearms in K-12 Schools:
Some staff and teachers are permitted to carry firearms in K-12 schools.
No Waiting Period:
Texas does not impose any waiting period for purchasing firearms.
No Training Requirement:
There are no state laws restricting large-capacity ammunition magazines, and the federal ban on these magazines expired in 2004.
High-Capacity Magazines:
There are no state laws restricting large-capacity ammunition magazines, and the federal ban on these magazines expired in 2004.
No Red Flag Laws:
Texas lacks a “Red Flag” law or firearm relinquishment orders for individuals experiencing mental health crises. While the state prohibits firearm ownership under restraining orders, it is unclear who has the authority to confiscate firearms in these situations.
Gun Show Loopholes:
Non-registered gun sellers can sell firearms at gun shows without requiring background checks.
The Challenge of Citizen Action in Texas
Unlike many other states, Texas does not allow citizens to initiate statewide initiatives or referendums. A constitutional amendment to create this process was rejected by voters in 1914, leaving Texans with limited avenues for direct legislative change.
Staying Energized in the Fight Against Gun Violence
Our Reducing Gun Violence action team faces significant challenges, but we remain energized and optimistic thanks to two key factors:
- Collaboration is Our Strength:
We are deeply committed to working alongside other groups in Tarrant County who share our goals. By amplifying the incredible work they are already doing and building a united movement, we know that together we can drive meaningful change. The more people who join this cause, the faster we will make a difference. - Unwavering Belief in Advocacy:
Our commitment to this work runs deep. We have seen too much to give in to resignation, and we refuse to give up. We believe that our collective energy, determination, and persistence will ultimately turn the tide and create a safer future for all.
“Hope is our superpower. Don’t let anybody or anything make you hopeless. Hopelessness is the enemy of justice.” – Bryan Stevenson
